NORTH GREENBUSH, N.Y. -- Temperatures crept close to ninety Tuesday as firefighters were called to a home on West Sand Lake Road. High humidity added to the heat and flames creating concern for their condition.
"Last thing we want to have on a day like today is have a firefighter go down because of heat exhaustion," Captain Bob Durivage said.
A rehabilitation center was set up in the shade across the street as the firefighters worked in shifts. Cold water and wet towels were in supply as EMTs checked for signs of dehydration, heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Firefighters from Wyantskill, Clinton Heights and Brunswick #1 were all there battling the flames. The police captain estimated between 75 and 100 firefighters were called because of the heat.
